We Are All Under the Same Sun • September 10 New Moon Ceremony

A glimpse inside our August gathering, and an invitation to join us this month

Aloha Kākou,

On the morning of the August eclipse, more than 130 of us gathered on Zoom, from Hawaiʻi, South Africa, Colombia, Ethiopia, Alaska, Australia, across the US mainland, and throughout Europe. Here on Kauaʻi the clouds were so thick we could not see a thing.

Kumu Aunty Sabra opened us with a chant. She told us this chant speaks of the sun that rises in the east, and how, as it rises, it warms the atmosphere, and with that warmth comes the memory of our kūpuna, the ancestors who placed us on the path we walk today.

Queen Eloise joined us from Cape Town, off grid, late into her evening. We were so happy to see her. She brought us back to a song we sang together when we visited her and the Korana people in South Africa last November:

"While Aunty Puna was speaking, I was reminded once again of the song that we sang the time that we were all together, when you were all here at home. We sing the song, The Sun, the Moon and the Stars: they work together. So why can't we? Now we also know that the sun gives time for the moon to shine, and the moon gives time for the sun to shine. They don't outshine one another."

Queen Eloise went on to share:

"I believe that our ancestors are watching us, and they're smiling at the mere fact that we have come to our senses, to not work in silos, but to bring everyone together so that we can all enjoy the beauty of humankind. I love Mohanji's words where he says that humankind is kind humans."

Then Elder Vav came on from the Isle of Wight, sitting right inside the totality of the eclipse, and told us what was happening around her while it was happening. Everything had gone dark. The birds had stopped singing. Her dog could not work out why it was dark when it was nowhere near bedtime.

"We're sitting here in this Zoom with people from all around the world, and we are together in one circle, holding hands, virtually holding hands under this eclipse. The cosmos, the Earth, the nature has given us this very big message that we're all under the same sun."

And then she gave us the bees:

"I always say I'm a hive keeper. I'm not a beekeeper. The bees choose to be with me. I hold hives, and the bees come, and they go sometimes, and others come back. But they work as one unit. They work together as one organism, and it's a huge lesson that if mankind worked in the same way, caring for one another and caring for the Earth, that we too could thrive, instead of our egos taking hold and making us work for greed and self."

Kumu Aunty Sabra closed us as she had opened us, asking blessings on each of us, on our families, on our animals, on our forests, on our land.

Thank you to everyone who continues to gather with us, month after month. The Elders continue to remind us that each breath, each smile, each moment of shared love is helping to keep the balance.

Our September New Moon is Thursday, September 10, and the details are below.

Kaiāulu New Moon gathering

Called to Go Deeper?

What you just read is one morning.

Each week, our Ancestral Wisdom Collective gathers in a smaller circle that follows the full rhythm of the moon. Guided by Mamo Lorenzo, Aunty Puna, and wisdom keepers from many traditions, we gather at each lunar phase to learn, practice, and deepen in relationship together. Like any meaningful relationship, the practice unfolds over time.

As a member, you'll receive access to our full archive of gatherings and a standing place in a global Community of Practice spanning many traditions and countries.

If something in these teachings speaks to you, we would love to welcome you closer to the fire.
