Kīpuni Aloha no Maui Embrace Beloved Maui
In the aftermath of the devastating Maui fires, Hawai‘i united on September 1 for synchronized ceremonies across the islands to focus on emotional and spiritual healing. Called Kīpuni Aloha no Maui, or Embrace Beloved Maui, the vigil was anchored in sunrise, noon, and sunset ceremonies grounded in Native Hawaiian traditions. On Kaua'i, we were blessed to participate in the ceremonies guided by Kumu Hula Puna Kalama Dawson, Kumu Sabra Kauka, and Kokua Kamalie. The ceremonies were further enriched by prayers and blessings from Mamo Lorenzo Izquierdo Arroyo in Colombia, along with elders and friends who synchronized their prayers from around the world. To watch ceremony replays from Maui, Moloka’i, Lāna‘i, Hawai‘i Island, and Kaua‘i, check out Rediscovering Hawai‘i’s Soul, who helped organize and share this beautiful intention. In the spirit of aloha, we would also like to share a crowdfunding initiative to assist our beloved elder and dear friend, Apela Colorado, who lost everything in the Lāhainā fire.
